Easiest Way to Earn Passive Income As a Freelance Web Designer

Written by on December 1st in Freelancing

As someone who is a freelancer, especially those doing it full time, we are always looking for ways to increase our total income. As in any other professions, it is always good to have some kind of a passive income. While others can do this through stocks, bonds and such, we as a freelance web designer or developer have a very easy way to earn more passive incomes (Caveat emptor).

The answer is: by providing Web Hosting to your clients.

Why:
First of all, as an expert on all things web, you should be very familiar with web hosting and servers. You work with it daily and you know it much better than they do. Rather than redirecting them to other web hosting companies, you can offer this to your clients as a value added service (you can also include Maintenance). For example, you can offer 1 year hosting with your web design package, and they will pay for the renewal yearly thereafter.

Secondly, you will develop longer lasting working relationships with your clients because you could be their one stop Website solution. This also adds value to your work and skills. Furthermore, since you will keep in contact with them, there is a high chance they will become your regular client and even send referrals.

Last but not least, it is easy and effortless to provide web hosting to your clients, as long as you choose the right providers and infrastructure.

PS: Before I forgot, the best thing is that Web Design and Web Hosting are the perfect match of each other, one cannot function without the other and not only can your Web Design client be your Web Hosting client, your Web Hosting client can also be your Web Design client!

How:
There are several ways this can be done.

First and easiest will be to get a good Reseller hosting from a reputable hosting provider and use them to create cPanel accounts for your clients. The obvious advantage to this is that you don’t really need to manage the hardware and network. However make sure that they have quick and responsive support in case you ever need to ask for their support.

Secondly, you can get a VPS or a Dedicated Server to set up your own cPanel server and provide the hosting to your clients. This will definitely require more effort and time, but you have more control over your server and clients’ sites.

Some reputable local Web Hosting companies that you can consider:

I am sure that many freelancers are already providing web hosting to their clients, and I have even met a few that sets up their own Web Hosting Business after successfully providing hosting to their web design clients.
